Center Will Close Operations on December 31, 2013

Fellow Advocates, Friends and Colleagues:

It is with a heavy heart and a happy outlook for the future, that I announce my retirement from La Fe Policy Research and Education Center (La Fe PREC), effective December 31, 2013. Consequently, La Fe PREC will close its San Antonio-based operations on the same date. It has been an honor to be part of the Centro de Salud Familiar - La Fe organizational family. ‘La Fe’ afforded us the opportunity to be a statewide voice advocating on behalf of issues important to the bienestar (well-being) of our community.

Established in January 2006, the La Fe PREC mission was driven by the purpose to promote family and community bienestar in the Mexican American community through knowledge, trust, and empowerment. Grounded in La Fe’s social justice principles, the Center’s approach incorporated policy research, leadership and advocacy training, and issue-based demonstration service projects within an organizing and collaborative advocacy framework.

La Fe PREC’s success could not have been possible without the work of our staff, and contributions from consultants and research interns. Staff contributions from Ms.’s Amy Casso, Senior Policy Analyst, and Pat Medina, Administrative Assistant have been particularly invaluable to our successes.

Although the Center’s journey is ending, my engagement in Latino bienestar will continue. It has been a great privilege to have worked and collaborated with such great colleagues and friends.

Gracias,
Juan

  • 83rd Legislature denies equality in health care access
Governor Perry’s comment that Medicaid is a failed federal program is wrong, and the 83rd legislature’s failure to pass House Bill 3791 as the purported “Texas Solution” to the state’s high uninsured problem is distressing. Both demonstrate ‘political’ opposition to the Medicaid Expansion which is harmful to the health and bienestar (well-being) of Texans.

The majority of studies on access, quality and costs, associated with the Medicaid program, show that the program has been a success since it began in 1965. Under the Affordable Care Act, the Medicaid Expansion is a series of pluses. It will save lives and reduce poverty; have little to no cost and save money; boost local economies and save jobs; and help build a stronger healthcare system for all Texans. An estimated 1.3 to 1.8 million uninsured Texans could finally gain health insurance coverage with the Medicaid Expansion…read more
